Unsolved Mysteries

Forcas: Welcome. I am Forcas Rhende, a graduate of the Bacrum Military Academy and former member of the Valeria Liberation Front. In this section, various phenomena of Tactics Ogre will be explained by the experts.

Mystery #1: For some odd reason when Haborym casts Petrify, the success rate is higher than when anyone else casts it.

Haborym: The reason why my Petrify spells are so accurate is because of my high DEX. If you take the time to notice, my DEX is the highest out of any character in the game as well. I found this out because in battle, I recruited an Archer, and turned her into a Witch (since I had no use for her as an Archer). Now Archers have the highest DEX out of any female class, and as a result, her Stun spells had an accuracy of 75-80% while the enemy was directly facing her. Her INT was lower than a normal Witch's, but her DEX was a good 100 points higher than that of a normal Witch. The increase in accuracy can be explained by the game's definition of DEX--the rate at which physical and magical attacks hit the enemy.

Mystery #2: The whole Loyalty meter thing and how it is affected by your actions.

Byan: I'm Byan Ohwn, former mage of the Valeria Liberation Front. First, let me describe to you the Loyalty scale. Basically, you can tell how loyal someone is by seeing what they say when you click on their name. What someone says depends on two things: their Alignment, and their Loyalty. I'll give you the list of possible sayings for each Alignment, with the saying of highest Loyalty first and in order of decreasing Loyalty:

Byan: Now I'll bet you're wondering how and why the Loyalty meter changes during the game.
One reason is by your various responses to different scenes in the game, such as the Baramus massacre. If you go along with the plan, the L peoples' Loyalty meter will go up, while the C peoples' will go down. There are also various questions throughout the game that you will be asked, and your answer will not have any direct impact on the game. An example is in Chapter 2L, when you run into Leonard in Rime. He talks to you about killing the Duke, and he asks you how you feel about being the new leader. If you say that it is your destiny, then some of the L peoples' (such as Presance) Loyalty will go up. If you pick the other choice, that you are a soldier, not a leader, then no one's loyalty will go up--some might even go down.

A way to decrease someone's Loyalty meter is by killing them in battle yourself, and then using Necro on them. For some reason, they don't like the idea of being resurrected as the undead...

A way to increase someone's Loyalty meter is by leveling them up in real, non-training battles. Maybe they become more loyal because they feel like they are making a difference in the real battle. All I know is that I brought a Level 1 Pumpkin Head (Alignment C) into a battle and trained him so that he was up to level. At the beginning, he said They don't have any particular complaints but they are not enthusiastic about joining the military, and by Level 10 he was saying Not only do they agree with your ideals, they have accepted you as a leader. I reset and tried leveling the Pumpkin Head up in Training, and his Loyalty didn't increase at all.

By now, I'm sure that you know that each character in your army has a different level of Loyalty towards you; however, what you may not know is that each race has its own level of Loyalty towards you as well! This is captured in the "Chaos Frame" that you have towards each race--while there's no way to determine your exact "rating" with each race, you can check the general level by going to a shop and trying to recruit a Soldier or Amazon of the race whose Chaos Frame you would like to know. You don't actually have to recruit them, but check their Loyalty towards you--it is a good indicator of how much you are liked by that particular race!

You can raise your Chaos Frame with a particular race as follows:

Forcas: I'm sure you'd love to know why Chaos Frames matter at all, wouldn't you? Well, the only known point in the game where they matter is the very end, particularly if Kachua does not survive until the end. If Kachua dies, then you becomes King of Valeria, and it is at this point where the people's opinion of you really matters. If your Chaos Frame is low with a particular race, then odds are that you will be assassinated shortly after you begin your rule. However, if your Chaos Frame is high with the Walstanian, Gargastan, and Bacrumese races, then you don't have that problem. Of course you've got another problem, which is the future invasion of the Kingdom of Lodis. You find this out through an ending in Zenobia, where King Tristan and Beast Master Gilbert (of Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen fame) discuss the misfortune of Valeria.

Hopefully this has been helpful in enhancing your understanding of Loyalty and Chaos Frames. At this time, I would like to credit www.ogre.org for the information about the numerical Loyalty Scale, the initial Loyalty information for each of the special characters, and for the information about the Chaos Frames. In case you wish to check it out, you can use the AltaVista Translator to translate the site from Japanese to English. Best of luck to you--I hope you have found this useful! If there's more that you wish to know, then I would recommend that you check out the Tips Section, as there are plenty of topics covered there.
