Tactics Ogre Armor Guide

Volac: They say that the best offense is a good defense. I heard that somewhere... Anyway, I will educate you about the various types of armor that are available to be used in combat in Tactics Ogre. Before I say anything about the actual armor though, let's cover some basic stuff related to the armor in the game.

First of all, each piece of armor belongs to a certain "element." There are seven such categories, which are:

Fire (Zoshonell)
Earth (Bartha)
Water (Gurza)
Wind (Hahnela)
Light (Ishtar)
Shadow (Asmodeus)
Physical (Neutral)

Now each character in the game has a certain level of defense against each element. This defense depends on the character's guardian element, which can only be Fire, Earth, Water, or Wind. A character has slightly better defense against attacks which are of their guardian element, and slightly worse defense against attacks of the element opposite of their guardian element (Fire vs. Water or Earth vs. Wind, for example). They usually have an average level of defense against the other elements. One can slightly increase their defense against an element by equipping armor belonging to the opposite element; Physical type armor has no opposing element, so it usually does not provide any special elemental defense. In this report, the name of each piece of armor will be written in the color of its element, so that it is easy to tell the element to which a piece of armor belongs.

Volac: It would make sense to talk about body armor first, since that is the most general, and often times protective, type of armor. Every "small-size" class in the game can use armor, but it is not always best to give a character protective armor because it will weigh them down, and they won't be as quick to strike or dodge. Full body armor is fine for the fighter-type classes, but for the other classes, you might want to try something else. Anyway, here is the body armor:

Volac: As an alternative to full body armor, there are a number of robes in Tactics Ogre. While they don't offer as much protection as armor does, they are a lot lighter and easier to move around in. Also, some robes can enhance the wearer's magic power. Here are the robes:

Volac: I've got a couple of things to say.

To get Deneb to join your troops, buy a lot of stuff from her shop in Chapter 4 (which moves from town to town). If you sell her 10 glass pumpkins (which you get from random encounters on the first thirty floors of Hell Gate) and then recruit 10 Pumpkin Heads (they don't all have to be in the party at once), then she will join you with some rare equipment, including the Fire robe.

The Wind robe is not hard to get, but it can be easily missed. On the battle on floor B50 in Hell Gate (the battle with Belzbute, the demon), there are some Ghosts and Skeletons that are equipped with items that are worth getting. Among those items is the Wind robe--all you have to do is persuade the Ghost which has it on.

Volac: Besides armor and robes, there are other types of protective gear which may be worn for protection or for certain magical properties it may contain. One of those types of armor is helmets, which provide good protection for the head. Here they are:

Helmets

Volac: Besides helmets, necklaces are also worn, mainly for their magical properties. Here are the various necklaces in Tactics Ogre:

Volac: Another piece of commonly worn armor is boots, which not only provide physical protection, but can enhance the wearer's movement across various types of terrain as well. The different types of boots are as follows:

Volac: Besides body armor, the most powerful source of protection is the shield. Characters using weapons that require both hands will not be able to use shields. They are very useful to those that can, however--here they are:

Volac: There are also a few gauntlets in the game. They serve the same purpose as shields, but offer a little less protection and are a bit lighter in weight. Here are the gauntlets:

Volac: Last but not least, we come to rings. Like necklaces, rings are worn for their magical properties more than they are for their physical protection abilities. These are the rings in the game:

Undead

Volac: Clearing up a few things...

The Soil, Aqua, and Wind rings can be tricky to find. Deneb has a Fire ring when she joins, if you've recruited at least ten Pumpkin Heads. You can find all of the rings as buried treasure with a character of less than 43 LUK.

The Banish spell is a holy elemental spell that will eradicate the undead. The Abyss spell is a shadow elemental spell that decreases the target's HP by a large percentage.

Volac: So there you have it--that's about all there is to know about the armor in Tactics Ogre. Go and learn about the weapons and magic in the game as well, and I'm sure you could even be a challenge for us Roslolians!
